Stop Germs: Clean Your Hands
Lavina Entel, Health Center
It’s so simple but so true—the best way to stop the spread of germs is to wash your hands often with soap and water.
Wash your hands the right way:
- Wet hands with water.
- Apply soap to hands.
- Rub hands together. Rub all surfaces of hands, fingers, thumbs, including under and around jewelry, for at least 15 seconds.
- Rinse hands well to remove soap.
- Dry hands with a paper towel.
- Use a paper towel to turn off the faucet.
Wash your hands often:
- Whenever your hands look dirty.
- After using the bathroom.
- After you cough, sneeze or blow your nose.
- Before and after you eat.
- Before you make meals or snacks, and especially after touching raw meat.
- After contact with body fluids like blood, urine, saliva or vomit.
- After touching animals or pets.
- After handling trash or changing diapers.
- Before and after touching your mouth (smoking, biting nails, etc.).
When to use hand sanitizers:
- When you can’t wash with soap and water.
- Before and after you have contact with someone who is sick.
- After you touch surfaces that others touch, like door knobs, keyboards and telephones.
- After shaking or holding hands with someone.
