“Nobody is using a room and my Zag wants to move into that room. However, I’ve been told that my Zag can’t move into this room. I don’t get it and this is frustrating.”

This room could be offline for a few reasons, but the main reason is that the room is most likely a courtesy room. Your next question might be,” What is a courtesy room?” Well, a courtesy room is one that can be used, at professional staff’s discretion, when there is a need that arises. Typically, that will be a time of an emergency or debilitating injury. We have these rooms spread across campus because we know that sometimes we will need different buildings and types of rooms, based on the scenario. We are selective about if and when we use these spaces. We want families to understand some of the dynamics of the space where your Zags are living.

So, your next questions might be, “What can my Zag do, if they want to change rooms?” The first thing about a move, is to try to work out the situation where your Zag is currently living. If that isn’t working, your Zag can talk to their RA or RD, in order to figure out what to do next. If things still aren’t going well, the student will need to either call or stop by the Housing and Residence Life main office on the 2nd floor in Crosby.  Our friendly staff will be able to assist your student and point them in the right direction. We want to make sure to balance finding a great experience for your Zag with some of the learning that goes along with living in close proximity with others, while also working within our physical housing constraints, so please know that both are a balancing act that we assess in housing situations.

Again, we are here to help, so please encourage your Zag to reach out to staff if they have any questions or concerns!
