This month’s Career Center & GAMP news is about an exciting collaboration between our office and the office of Academic Advising and Assistance. We are very excited to be hosting the 1st Annual Major/Minor Discovery Fair—Driver’s Seat: Mapping Your Major; Finding Your Career”—to help students learn about the various majors and minors offered here at Gonzaga, and how those majors can translate into post-Gonzaga lives.

Selecting (or changing) a major can be a stressful time for students, so here are some tips and resources you can share with your student to help them manage the stress and select a major that will fit their passions and post-graduate goals:

  1. Help your student reflect on their high school and college experience so far. What courses do they enjoy? What activities do they participate in outside of class? See if you can help them identify some patterns in strengths and interests that may be useful in determining a possible major and eventual career path.
  2. Make use of the self-assessment tools that are out there to help identify career fields that may align with interests. Our office administers the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) and Strong Interest Inventory. Students can take the tests online (MBTI is $15 and Strong Interest Inventory is $25) and attend a workshop that helps interpret the results. Check it out here: www.gonzaga.edu/careerassessments

  3. Encourage your student to spend time exploring the opportunities available for professionals with degrees in their areas of interest. A great resource for this kind of exploration is “What Can I Do with This Major?” Visit the Resources page of our website and click on the link to be redirected to the website. Then click “Connect majors to careers” for a list of academic disciplines and related career information.
  4. Get your student connected with Gonzaga’s Academic Advising and Assistance office! Students can call 509-313-4072 to set up an individual appointment with an advisor.
  5. Put the event “Driver’s Seat: Mapping Your Major; Finding Your Career” on your student’s calendar for Thursday, March 27th from 10am-2pm in the Cataldo Globe Room. This is a great opportunity for your student to walk around and ask questions of Gonzaga’s academic departments to help determine which majors are of interest!

Now is a great time for your student to visit the Career Center & GAMP office, so remind them to stop by before they head home for the summer!
