First Year Experience Programs

On behalf of First Year Experience Programs and GUide Core, I would like to personally welcome YOU to Gonzaga University. Your student, you and your entire family are now part of the Zag family. Sending a student off to college is a big step in your – and your student’s – life. We want you to know that you’re not alone. GUide Core, the student leader planning team of New Student Orientation and First Year Experience Programs is devoted to welcoming your student to Gonzaga with the utmost care.

GUide Core is a group of five current students – ranging from sophomore to senior class standing – who are excited and passionate about welcoming your Zag to the community. The theme for orientation is “Ignite Your Spirit” – and we hope to instill that in each new student. We chose this theme by mirroring our Jesuit ideals and identity in hopes of “igniting” each student – a call to action for each student to live out Gonzaga’s mission and values. GUide Core is proud to represent Gonzaga and help each student integrate into and become a part of our community.

GUide Core is here to give students the necessary tools and skills to have a successful first year as a Zag. From the first day of New Student Orientation to the last day of their first year, it is our hope that we make every single new Zag feel welcomed on campus and prepared for the journey ahead of them. Our tagline is “Orientation is a Process, Not an Event.” Through this, we hope to normalize the idea that it takes time to learn how to adjust living in a new place. Through orientation programming and events throughout the first year, GUide Core aims to acclimate students to their new home and connect with their new peers.

As family members of a new Zag, you play an important role in helping your student feel comfortable at Gonzaga. For those of you who will be on campus during Orientation Weekend (August 26-29), we have set aside time for you be with your Zag. Through intentional programming, your Zag will be provided with the skills, knowledge and awareness of how to be a successful student at Gonzaga University.

During New Student Orientation your Zag will experience the following:

  • An introduction to academic and student services.
  • Initial academic advising.
  • The opportunity to meet and get to know faculty and staff.
  • Connection to returning student leaders.
  • Familiarization with the campus environment and facilities.
  • Introduction to the Downtown Spokane Community.
  • Welcoming atmosphere in the Residence Hall and transfer student communities.
  • How Gonzaga lives out our Jesuit, Catholic mission.
  • Zag spirit!

As the Marketing GUide, I will be managing all of the First Year Experience Programs social media accounts, as well as the IGNITE Blog. Please have your student check their Zagmail and social media platforms often and follow us for updates. You can contact us with any questions related to New Student Orientation.
