 Center for Student Academic Success

As we anticipate the transition from winter to spring, students are also anticipating another important turning point on campus – midterm grades. If your student is disappointed in a grade, remind them to take into account how many grading opportunities there have been in each course and what assignments are still ahead of them. Encourage them to see this as an opportunity to meet with their faculty or assigned advisor.

There are also several resources to keep in mind. Academic Advising and Assistance (AAA) provides several services that may be beneficial, such as: academic recovery, early academic warning and academic advising (students may utilize the office’s walk-in hours or make an appointment with a professional advisor on staff). Students can contact AAA for an appointment at 509-313-4072 or advise@gonzaga.edu. Academic Advising and Assistance is on the first floor of Foley library, nestled in between the Writing Center and the Learning Studio.

The Learning Studio is a free one-on-one tutoring and mentoring program available to all Gonzaga students. The Learning Studio also provides strategies, tool and resources to assist students in taking control of their academic success through their Learning Assistants and the Digital Learning Studio. These resources are provided by Learning Strategies Management. The professionals in Learning Strategies encourage self-determination, self-advocacy and accountability by educating students on organization, planning, time management, goal setting and study strategies. Students meet one-on-one with a Learning Strategist to help them discover tools to create a successful academic career. Staff members also put on various workshops throughout the year. Past topics have included: Get Organized, Planning and Priorities, Study and Test Strategies, S.M.A.R.T. Goal Setting and Midterm Study Plan. The Learning Strategists can also create a custom workshop upon student or faculty request. Requests can be made at learningstrategies@gonzage.edu.

These resources are open to all students, whether they are reaching their self-defined success or not. Our professional staff members can provide additional strategies to aid students in developing themselves further academically, or demonstrate how new strategies they haven’t thought of can be applied to a professional environment.

We hope that as we reach these transitional moments, in our seasons and in the school year, our students are looking forward to the bright future ahead of them. We hope that they are reaching out to utilize the resources these offices and all our campus partners have to offer. “Being fully present is the best guarantee for a bright future.” – Guy Finley
