Gonzaga Give and Go is a collaboration between Housing and Residence Life and the Office of Sustainability. Throughout the years, during move out, staff has noticed large amounts of usable items being thrown away or many items getting left behind in rooms by residents to be thrown away by someone else. Formally named ZAGiving, Gonzaga Give and Go is a collaborative solution to unwanted items. This is a great sustainable opportunity to get rid of items students don’t want to take home for the summer or keep for the coming school year.

Gonzaga Give and Go will occur during finals week, over a three day period. Students will be able to drop off gently used items such as linens, small appliances, household items, furniture, electronics and clothing to the backyard of the Office of Sustainability (521 East Sharp). Volunteers will be present to sort the donated items and to make sure they are in working condition. A dumpster will be provided for non-acceptable items. Each day, a local non-profit organization will collect all of what was donated by the students. These organizations include: World Relief, the ARC of Spokane and Global Neighborhood.

As parents and family members, we encourage you to talk with your students early about what they are packing and ask if they plan to leave any items behind. If there are items, small or large, tell them about Gonzaga Give and Go and encourage them to make a donation during the allotted dates and times. Most students wait until one or two days before leaving school to start to pack. Since Gonzaga Give and Go is the week leading up to move-out, start having conversations with your students early to plan ahead on what needs to be donated. Remember, the more they donate, the less you have to carry!

Our hope is for Gonzaga students to plan ahead and critically think about how they are being sustainable during move-out. We believe that giving unwanted items further supports our institution’s mission to engage with local organizations supporting the poor and vulnerable. We look forward to seeing how much we can give and are excited to be partnering with three great local organizations.

Donation Drop-off dates and times are:

Thursday, May 10th 3-6pm
